The Blade

A Top Secret envelope arrived in my mailbox today, from my friend Dave Piper who promised a mysterious surprise. Upon opening it up, I found this. Hey, I like secrets! Let's go!

Cleverly secreted inside was this mysterious object. But by golly, what was it?

Hmmm. You know, I've seen this somewhere before, I thought to myself. I guess Dave already knew this, because before I knew it he sent me a drawing of the Soap Tablet of Euphoria!

But upon further examination, it was not the fabled soap tablet of Arthurian legend (you can read about it in Historia Saponicus, manuscript CCXVI). If Dave did actually discover this relic, I would have returned it to him, such is its value. And he certainly wouldn't have entrusted it to Australia Post of all people. No, the mystery object had to be something else.

Well then, I wondered, what about the Whetstone of Elation, which is mentioned more than once in the works of Alexandre Dumas?

Again, nice try, me, but wrong again. It was the wrong weight and texture to be the fabled whetstone of Dumasian legend. What it was, as it turned out, was something more of use to me – and therefore more valuable. A guitar plectrum, or 'pick' for those of you who speak a more uncultured brand of English.

With its chunky feel, warm tone, and the fact I haven't clumsily dropped it inside my guitar even once, it is a must-try. Thanks, Dave. Ask your purveyor of musical paraphernalia for 'The Blade' today. TODAY, I say!!

New Layout

After at least 5 years, I thought this blog was long overdue for a layout redesign, so here it is!

The background image is a watercolour illustration I did in the middle of the night 3 years ago, and the new header features Sugar from Airbury.

Leap Second

The last minute of June 2015 will have one extra second added to world time (giving it 61 seconds – my lucky number!). What will you do with your 'leap second'?

Eurovision Sketches

A couple of quick sketches done at about 6am while watching the Eurovision Song Contest final – the performers from Cyprus and Austria. Poor Austria, not a single point for the host nation (this hadn't happened since 1958!).

(On the other hand, Australia was in it as a one-off appearance and came 5th. Yeah!)

Cheer Up, Charlie

Hi everyone! No, I haven't given up on this blog. I'll continue updating it with the same posts as on the Tumblr page. Here's my tribute to the January 14, 2015 issue of Charlie Hebdo's cover art, the first following the attacks on their staff. Cartoonists forever, and all that!

For those who don't know, "Cheer Up, Charlie" is the name of a song from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. What?

Homemade Business Cards

Wouldn't'cha know it, the night after tomorrow is the opening night of the comics exhibition I'm in, and I don't have any business cards. Well, ones that are up to date, anyway. I don't expect I'll have to give any out, but you never know. So I made my own. Cool huh?

They were printed with acrylic printing letters onto already-existing cards with different coloured backs. Each one different. Ask me for one if you like. I expect I'll still have plenty of them.
